Gold does not tarnish in the way other things do. It holds its surface. It catches light and keeps it. To touch gold is to touch something that will not change under your hand. It is rare enough to matter, common enough to be found. The child learns that some things are precious because they last. Gold teaches that permanence is possible, even if it is not. Especially if it is not.
