The cigarette is fake but the gesture is real. Plastic white and orange. A prop for play-acting adulthood, for practicing the exhale, the nonchalance, the slow burn of something dangerous. The child does not smoke but learns the posture. The fake cigarette teaches that some things are learned through imitation before they are learned through doing. It teaches that the image comes first.
