Meat arrives as red plastic. It is food that will never spoil, never need to be eaten, never satisfy hunger. To hold it is to hold the idea of nourishment without nourishment itself. The child learns that some objects mimic reality so closely that the difference becomes strange. It teaches absence disguised as presence. It teaches that what looks like sustenance may be only a shape.
